How to Use Liquid Fertiliser

BACK
Guide
|
December 16, 2024

You have a beautiful lawn – and you want it to stay that way! A good fertilisation schedule is a must when it comes to boosting your lawn's defences against frequent usage (think kids and dogs), pests, and disease.

And while you know that you should apply fertiliser, the how can be a bit more elusive. Read on to find out what you should know before you apply fertiliser to your lawn.

Safety First

Liquid fertiliser is full of ingredients that your lawn will love. However, even pet-safe varieties, such as Exceed liquid Fertiliser Concentrate, should be handled with care. Liquid fertiliser can be harmful if it comes into contact with skin and should be stored out of reach of children and pets when not in use.

Once you’ve applied the fertiliser to the grass, it is safe for your family and pets to use the space. However, it’s advisable to wait until the product is dry to reduce exposure and contact.

Getting Your Set-Up Just Right

Many liquid fertilisers come as concentrates, meaning you’ll have to dilute them with water before applying them to the lawn. Using undiluted fertilisers can cause extensive damage.

Read the instructions to ensure you get the correct dilution ratio. Dosage varies from brand to brand so it’s always best to follow the specific instructions set out for the fertiliser you’re using.

Even application is key to a consistent, beautiful lawn. You can achieve this by using appropriate equipment such as a backpack sprayer, watering can, or use our hose-on sprayer liquid fertiliser. The task will go much faster if you choose the appropriate method for the size of your lawn - a watering can won’t make much of an impact if you’ve got acres of turf ahead of you.

Work in a methodical pattern to ensure you get every section once. This prevents you from doing multiple passes over some parts and leaving out others altogether.

Get The Timing Just Right

Paying attention to the weather is important. Apply your liquid fertiliser during times when no rain is forecast - ideally for at least 48 hours. Rain will wash the fertiliser away and you won’t see much, if any, benefit from your hard work.

Be aware of applying fertiliser during bouts of wind too. A strong gust can redirect the stream of fertiliser into nearby plants. Not all plants appreciate the nutrients in lawn feed, and it may result in wilted flowers or even leaf burn.

The best time to apply fertiliser is early in the morning, or the evening. Avoiding the hottest times of the day allows the fertiliser to soak into the soil before sunlight and heat evaporate the liquid.

Finish Off with A Bit Of Water

After using a liquid fertiliser, apply some water to activate the nutrients and support the soil as it absorbs the nutritious food. It also encourages nutrient uptake in the roots and helps prevent leaf burn. Lightly spray with a hose, sprinkler, or use a watering can. Too much water can wash away the nutrients, while too little prevents optimum uptake in the soil.

Your Lawn Will Love Liquid Fertiliser

With a bit of care and a regular maintenance schedule, you can keep your lawn in top condition. Using a fertiliser such as Exceed Liquid Fertiliser Concentrate will boost the nutrition content of your soil and create the perfect growing conditions for your lawn.
