Thinking you need to wait until spring for your new lawn?

Thinking about planting a new lawn this winter?

Our usually-camera-shy Coolabah Turf director Brad Shearer has ditched the work boots and jumped off the tractor to share some insight into the unique production practices that enable us to supply quality instant lawn products to you all year round!

Don’t put up with the mud at your doorstep this winter and don’t assume you need to wait until the weather warms up to create your very own green space. Here at Coolabah Turf we supply ALL our turf varieties ALL year round and in today’s blog we’re delivering both peace of mind and all the intel you need to install a new lawn right now - just days from the start of winter.

As long as your new lawn has access to a full sun environment, and is not going to be subject to dense shade and high traffic (kids or big dogs!), you can order your new lawn today and pursue your landscape dreams without delay!

So how is Coolabah Turf able to provide instant turf all year round, when many other suppliers pull up stumps when the winter chill hits?

One of the reasons this is possible, is because of the unique slab cut format we choose to produce all our varieties in. Specifically, each signature piece of our premium quality, slab cut turf is carefully and methodically harvested to enable a thicker piece of turf providing a more mature root system. Essentially the consistent sold base of soil (aka tender love and care) on every piece means less stress to the turf during the harvest process and more ‘bang for your buck’! And thanks to this thicker base of soil protecting the root system, your instant turf can actually exist in the shell of soil it is supplied within until it establishes into your own yard and growth kicks off when the warmer weather arrives.

In addition, our frost protection regime at planting also ensures your instant turf is protected in its crucial, early establishment stage.

As mentioned earlier, it’s super important you only install a new lawn in full sun, low traffic areas from May through to August. This is mainly due to the fact that your lawn has naturally slower root initiation, and longer establishment periods, during cooler weather and this is when the 'reduced traffic' advice becomes crucial.

If you have chosen to install a Sir Walter DNA Certified instant lawn this winter, here are a few additional tips for success:

  • Spread our custom blend fertiliser and water crystal starter product as supplied over the prepared area before laying your new turf. Ensure it is raked through the top 10mm of your area to ensure soil contact.
  • Apply Seasol at a rate of 2 litres per 100 m2 over the top of the turf once laid.
  • Fertilise your new turf with Sir Walter DNA Certified Premium Turf Lawn Food 5-6 weeks after laying.

For winter lawn maintenance, we also recommend you monitor the moisture in your winter lawn to ensure your turf does not get too wet or dry out at any stage.

In addition, mow only on the highest level of your lawn mower (if needed) prior to spring. If you have to mow, only take a maximum of one third off the leaf each time and remove any autumn leaves from the lawn to reduce rot and the potential of fungal outbreaks. Compacted leaves can also smother your lawn and prevent important light from getting through to where it’s needed, and can water log your lawn, trapping troublesome moisture.

In a nutshell Brad and our Coolabah Team wholeheartedly agree that there’s no reason to wait until summer to plant your new green space. Put simply, your winter lawn will still establish itself, albeit slower than turf planted during the warmer months, however it sure beats mud at your front door all winter long and you’ll be well ahead of the game once spring finally arrives!
