Artificial turf may look like a convenient fix. With no mowing or watering required, it can seem like an easy choice for clients focused on appearances and low upkeep. However, synthetic grass comes with a number of hidden costs and long-term drawbacks.
While the maintenance routine is less hands-on, the upfront costs for professional-grade artificial turf and base preparation are typically higher than natural turf. Over time, seams can split, infill can shift or compact, and the turf surface may degrade, particularly in high-traffic areas like sports fields.
Environmental impacts are also significant. Synthetic turf is manufactured from plastic using petrochemical processes, often containing microplastics and requiring chemical adhesives. These materials can leach into soil and waterways, making synthetic turf a less sustainable option when considered over the long term or at scale.
Installing synthetic turf involves more than just rolling out a carpet. The base must be excavated and properly compacted, which adds time and cost to any project.
