Premium Golf Turf for Putting Greens & Golf Courses

Home » Projects » Leading Commercial Turf Suppliers For Instant Turf Projects » Premium Golf Turf for Putting Greens & Golf Courses

There are few things more satisfying than watching a ball roll smoothly across a pristine putting green. The right turf is essential for achieving this, along with creating high-performance, visually appealing, low-maintenance playing surfaces from the tee through the fairways and roughs.

At Coolabah Turf, we share that passion for the sport. We partner with professional greenskeepers and avid home golfers to supply premium natural golf course turf that provides an exceptional playing surface, whether for a championship course or a backyard putting green.

Our elite sports turf background means we understand the precision required to create surfaces that are both beautiful and high-performing, providing great playing conditions for every golfer.

Our Premium Varieties: From Tee to Golf Green Turf

We grow a select range of Lawn Solutions Australia-certified turf, each chosen for its proven performance in a demanding golf environment.

TifTuf Bermuda

TifTuf is a real game-changer, whether you’re building a backyard putting green or upgrading a well-loved community course. You can mow it super short for a fast, true roll that rivals the traditional bentgrass varieties. It’s a tough grass that handles constant play and bounces back fast from foot traffic and divots. Best of all, it’s unbeaten for drought resilience, requiring nearly half the water of other grass varieties. Discover the smart choice of golf putting green turf for getting that pro-level feel without the pro-level fuss.

Nullarbor Couch

For a classic golf green look without the premium price tag, Nullarbor Couch is a great option. This sun-loving grass delivers a reliable and consistent fine-leaf surface that thrives when mown low for a smooth, true roll. It’s tough enough to handle regular play on fairways and tees, delivering fantastic performance on a realistic budget. It’s the perfect golf grass turf for creating a brilliant home putting green or covering large areas without breaking the bank.

Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu

For the highest-traffic areas of the course, like busy tees and landing zones, you need a golf turf that can take a beating and bounce back fast. Eureka Kikuyu is that hard-working champion. Its vigorous, self-repairing nature means divots seem to disappear overnight, keeping your fairways looking great and always ready for play. While it demands regular mowing, nothing beats its ability to handle constant wear and tear on the busiest parts of your course.

Sir Grange Grass

Sir Grange Zoysia

Sir Grange Zoysia is a world-class grass, famous on golf courses across America for its stunning looks and low maintenance needs. However, as a warm-season grass, it can struggle with the high-performance demands of a Victorian fairway. For our local climate, we recommend it as an exceptional choice for specific applications. Its beautiful, fine-leaf texture creates a dense, carpet-like surface, making it perfect for low-traffic feature areas, premium clubhouse surrounds, and ornamental roughs where visual appeal is the top priority.

Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo Grass

Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo Turf

While not a playing surface for fairways or greens, Sir Walter is the perfect problem-solver for the rest of the course. Do you have shady areas near the clubhouse, under trees or along cart paths where other grasses fail? Sir Walter thrives where others struggle. Its lush, broad leaf creates a beautiful, deep green border and a wonderfully soft surface for walkways and garden surrounds. It’s the ideal choice for completing the picture of a perfectly presented golf facility.

The Authentic Feel: Natural Grass vs. Synthetic Turf

For home golfers creating a backyard putting green, the choice often comes down to natural or artificial grass. While the synthetic option might have its place in putt-putt and practice mats, it can’t truly replicate the feel and performance of living greens. Natural golf turf reacts to the ball, the weather and your touch, offering a realistic look and playing experience that challenges your skill and feels like the real thing.

What to Know About Synthetic Grass for Golf Putting

Artificial putting turf is designed to provide a consistent, smooth roll. However, this uniformity is also its biggest drawback.

  • Unrealistic Feel & Ball Roll: Synthetic grass lacks the natural grain and subtle imperfections of a real green. The ball tends to roll out without accepting spin, failing to replicate the conditions of a real course. It often has a realistic look from a distance, but the feel underfoot and the interaction with the ball are fundamentally different.
  • Heat & Durability: Like all plastic surfaces, synthetic turf absorbs and radiates heat, making it uncomfortable on hot days. The plastic yarn can also become worn or frayed in high-traffic areas over time.
  • Limited Skill Development: Because the surface is so predictable, it doesn’t challenge a golfer to read the grain, speed and break in the same way. It’s practice, but not a true representation of the golf game.

Why Pros and Purists Prefer Natural Putting Turf

A natural grass putting green offers a true test of skill. It’s a dynamic surface that rewards a well-read putt and a confident stroke. The ability to control spin, the satisfyingly soft feel of the turf, and the authentic sound of the ball dropping in the cup are sensations that synthetic turf cannot match. For those serious about improving their golf putting, natural grass is the sensible choice.

golf Turf FAQs

What is the best turf for a backyard putting green?

For the ultimate backyard putting green, TifTuf Bermuda is the elite choice due to its dense growth and ability to be mown extremely low for a true roll. For a more budget-conscious project that still offers fantastic performance, Nullarbor Couch is a great option, but keep in mind it requires 6+ hours of full sun per day. TifTuf, on the other hand, can thrive on as little as 4 hours of direct sunlight.

How does a natural green affect ball roll compared to artificial putting turf?

A natural grass green has “grain”, which is the direction the blades of grass grow. This subtly influences the path and speed of your putt, and learning to read the grain is a key golfing skill.

Synthetic turf has no grain, providing a more predictable but less authentic roll. Natural greens are also more receptive to spin, allowing skilled players more control over their shots.

Can TifTuf Bermuda really be used for professional-quality greens?
Absolutely. While Bentgrass has been the traditional choice, recent trials have shown that TifTuf maintained at very short lengths (as low as 3mm) and treated with Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) provides a consistent, professional putting surface. Its superior drought, heat, and wear tolerance make it a more durable and resource-efficient option for modern golf courses.
