Melbourne and VIC-Wide
Eureka Kikuyu enjoys a reputation as a proven performer nationwide thanks to its versatility across a range of regional conditions around Victoria.
In warm climates, Eureka Kikuyu grass exhibits its superior drought tolerance thanks to its strong, deep root base. Think of its root system like long straws, sucking up the moisture and nutrients from deep in the subsoil. Those roots help Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu maintain its health and vitality during harsh summers.
In cold climates, Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf demonstrates excellent cold weather and winter weed resistance. Its impressive winter growth habit means it can be installed all year round. And while it displays some winter discolouration, it has a significantly shorter dormancy period than many other grass varieties thanks to its cool weather tolerance.
In addition to its pleasantly thick green growth mat, it offers good erosion control, high tolerance of drought and the ability to perform in waterlogged soil – suitable for planting on slopes and drainage/transpiration areas.
Earning its ‘Premium’ label through rigorous testing and performance, Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf is the only kikuyu grass to be backed by a 10-year warranty. Tips for Growing Eureka Kikuyu Lawns
Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf is winter active. So despite being a warm-season grass, it still displays aggressive growth habits over winter. For Victorians, this means Eureka Kikuyu Premium VG grass can stand up to those frosty mornings and cold Antarctic blasts. A sun-loving variety of instant turf, Kikuyu Village Green is drought-tolerant and thrives throughout the hot, dry summer months.
Relatively low maintenance, Village Green turf will still need some extra care for optimal appearance and performance.
Irrigation
In the weeks after you lay Eureka Kikuyu grass , frequent watering is required to ensure your new lawn doesn’t dry out before taking root. But after establishment, hydration requirements drop off markedly. During winter, watering is required only if there are signs of dryness or wilting. If irrigation is needed, water in the early morning by giving the topsoil a good soak with a sprinkler for about 30 minutes.
Mowing
Eureka Kikuyu turf requires regular mowing due to its aggressive growth. Always ensure the mower blades are sharp, and never mow more than ⅓ of the leaf at any time, unless dethatching. Eureka Kikuyu turf will perform best if maintained at an optimum mowing height of between 15-20mm. Keep mowing height at the higher end of the range during winter dormancy to avoid stressing the grass.
Fertilising
We recommend fertilising Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf in mid-September to promote rapid ‘green-up’ after winter. Apply again in early April, to support autumn growth, or whenever a boost is needed. For example, a lawn that has sustained high traffic during the warmer months may require additional applications of fertiliser and water, two key inputs to growth rates.

Eureka Kikuyu Grass FAQs
Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu is a warm-season grass variety that has a medium leaf and an attractive bright green hue. Shorter plant internodes give this grass a more packed, dense canopy that looks and feels good underfoot.
Eureka Kikuyu is one of Australia’s most popular lawn choices, and for good reason. Fast-growing, vibrant and tough, it delivers great coverage and recovery even under challenging conditions. This warm-season grass performs best in a sunny aspect, has good drought tolerance and winter resilience, making it perform across most Australian climates.
Its rapid growth and durability lend it to laying over larger areas, active backyards and public spaces. As one of the most economical turf varieties available, it’s a favourite for families, landscapers and anyone wanting a low-cost, high-performance lawn.
Very High Drought Tolerance
Eureka Kikuyu grass requires only moderate watering once properly established. For those in medium drought-affected climates where there is little rainfall or municipal water restrictions, they can rely on Village Green Kikuyu turf’s deep root system. It’s the deep root base that enables kikuyu turf to access moisture from further down in the soil profile.
During peak heat, Eureka Kikuyu may slow its growth, but it will bounce back quickly with deep watering. We recommend watering two to three times a week in summer (less in spring and autumn), depending on local conditions. Thanks to its vigorous growth habit and quick self-repair, it handles temporary dry periods far better than many cool-season grasses.
An Economical All-Rounder Grass
If you’re looking for turf that balances performance with affordability, Eureka Kikuyu stands out as a truly economical all-rounder. It’s the ideal grass for laying home lawns and turfing public spaces on a budget. It offers quick coverage, fast bounce-back from damage and relatively low maintenance needs. Get great bang for your buck for schools, parks and large residential lawns without sacrificing colour, density or wear resistance.
Great In High-Traffic Areas
Eureka Kikuyu exhibits rapid spread via vigorous runners (stolons), meaning it can self-repair from heavy wear or damage. Whether it’s exuberant pets, club sports or an epic session of backyard cricket, this turf can take the pressure. With regular mowing and seasonal care, it maintains a good, tight growth mat for busy backyards, public venues and sports grounds.
Like most kikuyu turf varieties, Eureka Kikuyu Village Green grass has a reduced shade tolerance and requires 6+ hours of sun to thrive. On the other hand, its strong winter growth makes Eureka Kikuyu unique for a summer grass variety. While it shuns low-light environments, it has quite reasonable cold weather tolerance and will establish itself easily in cool climates all year round.
You won’t see a more aggressive grower than Eureka Kikuyu! Having said that, it needs good old-fashioned lawn maintenance and favourable conditions to look its best:
- Get the conditions right: Kikuyu can grow in a variety of soil types, however, it does have a preference. Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu Turf grows best in fertile, light to medium textured soil with a pH of 5.5-7.0. Eureka Kikuyu needs full sun and prefers growing in warm temperatures (15°C to 25°C is its sweet spot!). However, Eureka Kikuyu turf is able to maintain healthy growth even during winter.
- Regular mowing: Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu is a dense, rapid-growing lawn type and needs to be mowed regularly, especially in the warmer months. Dethatch in late spring for best results.
- Fertilising: Kikuyu is highly responsive to nitrogen. We recommend using a slow-release fertiliser during the warmer months to avoid runaway growth. Ideally, reapply once in late spring, again in mid to late summer and again in late autumn.
- Irrigation: It’s important to observe the efficient irrigation of your kikuyu to maintain its growth. Only water as needed, and never during winter unless it’s showing signs of drying out. When you do water, do so early in the morning.
Nothing looks and feels as good as thick, carpet-like grass. It’s the perfect setting for outdoor barbecues and backyard footy games.
Kikuyu is a tough turf variety, known as a fast-growing and lush lawn type. However, its performance can suffer under certain conditions. If you notice your Eureka Kikuyu lawn thinning out, you’ll want to first look at your mowing habits.
A few things to consider to improve thickness and overall lawn health:
- Regular mowing discourages upright growth and promotes lateral spread, leading to a thicker, healthier lawn.
- Running the mower in different directions helps the grass stand upright and promotes even growth.
- Maintaining a mowing length on the shorter side can improve turf density. Remember never to remove more than ⅓ of the leaf blade at a time!
Other things to keep an eye on are fertilising, adequate watering, dethatching (to improve nutrient absorption to more effectively feed your lawn) and limiting foot traffic. The use of Plant Growth Regulators is an option for kikuyu. These chemicals will slow vertical growth and encourage lateral growth, achieving more density in your lawn and reducing the number of times in a month you will have to mow it!
Village Green Kikuyu is known for its invasive spreading. Its aggressive growth habit can mean regular creepers/runners infiltrating garden beds and pathways. Kikuyu grass can behave like a weed and will require regular maintenance to control its invasive behaviour.
One of the simplest ways to stop Kikuyu grass from spreading is to ensure regular mowing and whipper snippering of the lawn edges. But once runners take over your gardens, you may need to:
- Pull it out by hand: If the invaded area is relatively small, you might be able to put on your gloves and simply rip it out. Take care to pull out all the runners by hand, perhaps using a spade to sever them into manageable sections.
- Use a non-selective herbicide: A chemical like glyphosate can effectively kill off creepers and unwanted patches of grass. Invasive grasses like kikuyu grow tall quickly, so the best time to remove runners is when there’s a bit of length to the lawn. Learn more about controlling invasive grasses here.
Victorians will recognise that build-up of dry organic matter in the grass. It’s not only unsightly but can also hamper the health of your lawn (not to mention making mowing harder).
If you see spots of dry, frayed grass after mowing or notice your lawn feels spongy underfoot, then it’s likely you have thatch. This natural accumulation of dead grass stems and debris accumulates below the surface of your lawn around the blade base, preventing air, sunlight, water and nutrients from penetrating the soil.
Good news is, removing thatch from kikuyu grass is easy. Grab your mower and dethatching rake, and try these tips:
- Mow low: Also known as scalping, mowing your kikuyu at a very low height will remove thatch and encourage regrowth.
- Use a rake: If your thatch is around 1cm deep and covering a relatively small area, you can get away with using a dethatching rake. This is the easiest and lowest-impact option.
- Hire a vertical cutter: If you’ve got a lot of lawn to cover, hiring a vertical cutter (or dethatching machine) will make light work of dethatching your Kikuyu turf.
You will find more support to dethatch your lawn here.
Kikuyu is a warm-season grass variety, so the best time to dethatch is late spring or early summer during the growing season so it repairs quickly. After dethatching, feed your lawn with a quality fertiliser and water deeply.
Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu turf is highly drought-tolerant. Because of this, you’ll only need to water on an as-needed basis. But there are some exceptions:
- If your Village Green Kikuyu lawn is showing signs of dryness or is wilting
- If you have just installed your Eureka Kikuyu turf
Following installation, your Village Green turf will require less water to establish and less water to maintain than other turf varieties once established. Water on an as-needed basis only to prevent high thatch build up and unnecessary maintenance. One of the unique features of Eureka Kikuyu Premium VG grass is its fibrous root system. This enables it to draw water from deep in the subsoil keeping it nourished even in hot temperatures.
General advice is to water as needed during the summer months and avoid watering during the winter months.

If you have a Eureka Premium VG Kikuyu lawn you’re likely to have noticed it doesn’t need a lot to keep it growing! A speedy grower, it’s critical to note this turf variety should only be fertilised on an as-needed basis.
Best practice? Fertilise your Eureka Kikuyu turf with a high-nitrogen lawn food 6 weeks after installation. From there, further top-ups can be applied, once at the start of spring (to assist with spring green up) and once or twice through autumn to prepare it for the onslaught of cooler winter weather.
Follow these fertilising instant turn guidelines to ensure your Eureka Kikuyu remains strong, happy and healthy:
- Fertilise in early September using a complete fertiliser such as Lawn Solutions Australia fertiliser.
- Fertilise in autumn with a slow-release fertiliser.
- Fertilise again in early summer (only as needed).
- Use a slow-release fertiliser if your lawn is lacking in greenness/vibrancy.
- Avoid manure-based fertilisers.
Village Green Kikuyu turf is one of the most economical turf types available due to its aggressive growth habit.
